Arr! The light!

The moon shined brightly again, escaping the cloud that obscured it. On this dark vigil, bright light was worse than anything.

He squinted, looking again towards the waves of the sea. He knew the tell-tale signs of a ship’s approach, long before any normal man. They called him Far Sight, and he was more valuable than any save the chief, but also the loneliest. For his job was to sit here every night, alone, lest the very presence of another distract him.

Sometimes he wished he’d blink at the wrong moment, ending the loneliness once and for all.
