Jennifer,
(a song to my daughter)

How many songs have
they written for you

Amid the "Mellow-Yellows"
and the Denver-lands?

I've listened to them all
but none can touch you.

Maybe because I know you so well.

After all, I was there,
wasn't I?

All the times that you
were becoming you,

And finally when you
became you,

And even now that you
are you.

After all, that's a mother's privilege,
isn't it?
To be there*.

To be there
just to watch,
kind of on the sidelines,

While God
melds and
molds.

To be there if He needs
a little earthly help
here and there.

Maybe I'll write a song
and try to tell them
who you really are;

'Cause I know you so well.
Don't I??
