TheBanyanTree: Bad Pizza

John,

I don't know. With the grayish color it sounds like the pepperoni was "freezer
burned". Might not have tasted great, but probably wouldn't make you sick.
But the cheese on the pizza would have been horrible. Been there, ate some,
lived. Freezer burned cheese on a pizza doesn't really melt and tastes like an
old styrofoam cup. Not that I think the cheese on frozen pizzas is real
cheese...

While rummaging through a deepfreeze the other day, I found a package of
tenderized roundsteaks and a zip-lock bag of t-bones labeled "stakes". Not in
my writing. There was lots of frost inside the packaging and the meat was
grayish tan.

Yummy? Not. Especially after noticing the roundsteaks were dated "sell by June
24 1995". I can't imagine how we managed to overlook that package of six t-bone
stakes.

Being too cheap to just throw the stuff away, after all, it they are not almost
family heirlooms by now, they must be some kind of "collectible", I decided to
feed the dogs. What the heck, folks find mastodons or wooly mammoths in
Siberian glaciers and eat 'em. When was the last time anyone saw a furry giant
elephant trotting around? Almost eight year old beef in my minus 10 degree F
deepfreeze should be better. Fresher, anyway.

Everything went into one large zip-lock bag which went into the sink to thaw.
After about an hour I had the idea to fill the bag with water. To thaw it
quicker. That actually helped a lot. When I pulled the stakes out after a
couple of hours they were mostly thawed and actually sort of pink. As I stacked
them on a plate, I sprinkled one side with plenty of salt, pepper, and garlic
powder. I covered the plate with a sheet of plastic wrap for another hour or
so.

Propane grills are handy. We use ours a lot. Enough that I just replaced the
burner for the second time. My dogs know what that grill is for. Though they
very seldom get anything from the grill, they know.

I cooked a lot of steak that night. The dogs slept with full bellies. So far,
three days later, they are still alive.

While feeding the dogs, I nibbled on a few pieces. Smelled great. Tasted fine,
just very dry. Didn't bother my stomach a bit.

paul : also still alive three days later.
