TheBanyanTree: Out of Character

Well said Monique. As I have told you, I do not know depression. I can only
learn from words like yours.

I am one of those who only saw suicide as a selfish act. It leaves such a
devastating impact on everyone they knew. And yet, as you said, we can
never know the mind of the person committing the act.

I reversed my stand, if only moderately changed my opinion, about 25 years
ago, when a close friend took his life. Everyone said, "it was out of
character". Ted was a successful businessman. He was incredibly handsome
with a beautiful wife and family. Ted was on the church board, lead men's
studies and was respected by everyone.

Later, we learned that Ted and his family knew of his depression and were
working through it. The morning of his death Ted and his wife went to the
therapist, who announced that they were making good progress. When they
returned home, he walked into his office, closed the door, put a shotgun
under his chin and pulled the trigger.

I miss him today. We can not know the why. All the speculation in the world
will not provide one synapse impulse of resolution. Love the person, love
the family. The clock never goes backward and neither can we.
