'After its death in the United States, a horse called Phar Lap became
rather widely distributed, with its skeleton in New Zealand, and the
rest in Australia: its hide in Melbourne, and its heart in Canberra.
Popular legend in the Antipodes claims the horse was "poisoned by the
Yanks" because it was too good, but there is another theory, spoken
occasionally by colourful racing identities in Australia, to the
effect that Phar Lap was accidentally poisoned by its own connections,
who had been dosing it regularly with strychnine (or sometimes
strychnine and another poison) to make it go faster - urban legends
are like that.
The punch line of this Australian version is that a veterinary surgeon
was called in and legitimately gave the horse a small dose of
strychnine to treat it, and combined with the illicit doses, the horse
died.'
BTW, I noted Woofess' gaffe, but figured that Wagga Waggans play AFL,
so their souls are damned, and they may as well be rated as borderline
