TheBanyanTree: Sluts, anyone? **Sexually Explicit Language**

They are extremely unpleasant, aren't they, these 'shock jocks'. I'm
pleased to see there seems to be a backlash against them, in our country
too. One of our own versions of this horrible species is a fellow called
Kyle Sandilands. He has made a career out of a very thin skill set - namely
to open his mouth and vomit out whatever insulting opinion that happens to
come out.

While prepared to heap vitriolic abuse on his victims, he is remarkably
thin-skinned about comments directed at him. This was his on-air response
to a female journalist who wrote a piece on the poor ratings of his TV show:
' "Fat slag...you're a piece of sh*t. You haven't got that much titty to be
wearing that low cut a blouse. Watch your mouth girl, or I will hunt you
down.' Charming. Is it any wonder he's single?

However, he claims that his attacks and his responses to attacks on him are
merely him doing his job. He's paid to be a big-mouth shocker, which is
probably true. He just expects his victims to take the abuse in the spirit
in which it's intended, ha ha, hey it's just part of being in the public
persona business.

His acidic spew quoted above tipped some people over the edge, and a young
law graduate started a petition aimed at advertisers of Mr Sandilands' radio
show, urging them to withdraw their sponsorship. Last I heard, 27,000
people had signed the petition, which is pretty good in our population. And
many advertisers did indeed withdraw their dollars. It might not have been
directly due to the petition, but it certainly didn't hurt that it
demonstrated that lots of their actual or potential customers were as sick
of Mr Sandilands' disgusting behaviour as the advertisers probably were.

The thing is, these people are employed in the first place because enough
people enjoy their work that it results in income for the advertisers and
the media outlets they work for. So what does that say about a large
proportion of our populations? I'm sure lots of people don't take them
seriously, but SOME must.

Scary.

Cheers,
Anita
