I wrote this for my husband of 54 (and still racing cars) years passed
away instantly on Feb 21, 2012 in a sudden accident at this race car shop.
This will be read at his "Celebration of Life" gathering.
WHEN I GO
When I Go
It will not be with hesitation,
A dipping toe in a chilly pond.
It will be a running leap
A revving up
And churning tires
As the green flag waves.
And I will be away
Speeding toward my next adventure.
And though I love you well
As I always have,
Do not cry overlong
But remember me with joy,
For that is how I lived.
I raced the race with daring
There was no holding back.
The joy was not in winning
But how I handled all
The bumps and hills and curves
And shared the thrill with everyone,
friends and loves alike.
Attack the course with confidence
And never shirk nor faint
Do it all with all you have
And give it all your passion
No matter what your chosen way.
In work or love or friends or play
Leap in with utmost joy.
So do not mourn my passing
We’ll meet soon again.
In love and friendship for all time
You are within my heart.
And when that checkered flag is waved
You’ll join me in the Winners’ Ring
And then we’ll never part.
There are some things in Life from which I will never recover.
