February 21, 2012

The world stopped rolling around today;
There was no sunset, there was no night.
There was only the silence
of my inner screaming,
The bursting of a million memories
Igniting my every drop of blood
My every breath.

In an instant you were gone
And I was not there;
To hold your hand?
To stop the clock?
To grab you from the moment?
I was not there to say goodbye
And knew you had left me behind.

I breathe in your scent on the things you left
Holding, holding, wishing in vain.
There is no turning back
There is no doing it over
There is no tomorrow.
And no you to offer me comfort
For my greatest loss.

Is it solace that we had the morning?
That we shared a meal and conversation
And a soft hug in parting
And when I looked back,
You were still smiling, Still waving goodbye
As duty called
And then did death.

Are you there?
Somewhere?
Can you feel the linger of love
That will go on as long as I breathe?
Do you hover and watch
As we take your things away
As they are spread to the winds?

Are you there?
Can you hear me yet?
A trick of mind that I feel you.
That the brush of air across my cheek
Is the touch of your hand.
That you hear me whisper in my loneliness
“I love you.”
