I hope I am not duplicating a post that I have already made. If I am, I apologize. But Nancy Lee's comments on Zeffer made me remember this poem that I wrote in 2006.
AGAINST THE WALL...
He stood against the wall,
One foot up—pressed hard,
Sole against concrete blocks,
The other jutted forward
Just a bit
To keep his balance.
His left hand,
Jammed into his jacket pocket
Closed into a fist
Creating a bulge
Just above the hip.
In his right hand he held a cigarette.
He looked ominous for a boy.
Hood up and pulled forward
Over his brow.
Keeping his face half hidden.
Only his lips were visible,
Full and pouting
Dry and broken.
Brooding,
Staying away,
Staying on his own.
So silent
So hard.
Until the shots rang out
And decorated his dark
With crimson.
Then he fell
Soft and supple
To the ground
And his cigarette burned orange
Upon the concrete.
