Chocolate IS poison to dogs. However, most chocolate candy these days  
contains so little chocolate there is little to fear.  Only the very best,  most 
expensive chocolate will harm the dog, and the Baker's type chocolate,  which is 
nearly pure.  A bag of M & Ms, for instance, is nearly without  chocolate. 
It's all flavoring.
