Though not "enmeshed," I am currently adventuring through
several books, and one of them has some interesting material
you might be able to use..  Deep in Bill Bryson's A Short
History of Nearly Everything, is the surprising note
comparing the number of genes in various organisms.  We
humans have 46 Chromosomes and some ferns have more than
600.  The lungfish has 40 times more DNA than we.  We have
35-45 thousand genes, about the same number as found in
grass.  

I guess you could say that grass with culture becomes a
lawn.  Our 46 Chromosomes with culture have produced Jazz
and the Moonlight Sonata.
