TheBanyanTree: jelly jars

We raised jelly jars in a toast
the red table wine mellow
lightening our load
at the end of the day
casting a warm glow
across the table
as we toasted
mother's pasta
mother's sauce.

It was humble
it was all we had
we never noticed
that it was less than
any other family had.

I kept the jelly jars
taking them from my mother's cupboard
after the funeral
and putting them in my own
and still we raise the jelly jars
in a toast
to the pasta
and to the sauce.

raising a jelly jar in toast..

to your mom..
to poured honey..
back yards..
golden days..
sharing treasure in words..

Grateful thanks, Mike.

when the endless line of sandwiches exhausted
each jar, mom would wash out the thin film
of grape, and leave them on the sunny sill
where they caught the warm light.
the perfect size for our little hands
to get our own drink from the big sink.

the long sun was like poured honey
from a jelly jar in those golden days.
now, when these thin grey tickings crumble
into a shrinking supply of dim evenings
I pour and sip a jelly glass of scotch,
pondering a spun-away honey world
no bigger than the back yard.
