I'm curious.  Why no GPS? With that and a map, you could 
have known precisely where you were, the bearing and 
distance to Franklin, and if moving, a ballpark guess at 
your time of arrival. In fog.  At night.  Doesn't matter. 

Thanks for this adventure anyhow.  No GPS definitely adds
to the adventure.
