Background. I had been unable to sleep for more than a couple minutes
at a time due to a throbbing pain in my second toe. I had been up
and about three times trying to figure out the why of it and what in
the heck I could do about it. I couldn't think at that time of the
morning, except to think I sure do need some sleep. I hope it goes
away. I took some aspirin, tried putting ice on it, propping my foot
on a pillow, all to no avail. The third time I went back to bed,
hubby Al's eyes opened. Hence this conversation:

I have a problem. My toe is THROBBING and I don't know what to do
about it. I've tried everything I can think of.

Huh. Same toe I looked at last week?

Yep. I don't see any ingrown nail or anything like that though. It
just ACHES and it's hot.

(I crawled back in bed, leaving my foot out and propped on a pillow.
He moves toward me and kicks the pillow.)

Yee-owwwww!

THAT hurt?

I'll say.

(Silence for a spell before Al gets up and turns the light on. He
starts going through his junk drawer.)

What're you doing?

I have an idea.

(My mind thinks. Great. What kind of harness is he going to rig up
for me? He finds a tube of something and starts putting it on the
hurting toe.)

What's that?

It suppose to deaden the nerve endings and get rid of the pain.

Toothache medicine?

(A big grin) Yeah! (He gets back in bed. A few minutes later...)

Is it working?

I dunno. Might've taken the edge off, but it's still throbbing.

Hmmm.

(Several minutes go by. I'm still awake and apparently so is he.)

Is it working yet?

Somewhat.

Hmmm. Do you want one of my gout pills?

NO.

You'd know in a couple of hours if that's the problem or not.

Argh. Would you like to get me some more aspirin or maybe even cut the toe OFF?

I'll get the aspirin. (He does and I take it.)

Thank you, Hon. I love you. Go ahead and go to sleep. No sense in
both of us lying awake til morning.

Al went right to sleep and after a bit, so did I.

Life is good.

Gloria
