PRAYER OF THE FALLEN

Walking through the old battlefield
Where once the battle raged
The grass regrown,
 The sun it shown
The scars of war were lost.
None could recall the awful cost,
Only who had won.
The blood that was shed
The grass it had fed
Now that the fight was done.

Quiet lay over the battlefield
Where once the guns had roared.
The wind whispered through the plain
As the robins chirped away
When suddenly a voice I heard
And chills ran up my spine.
‘Twas the voice of one slain
On that field so long ago
The voice was strong and sad
As this message he did recite.

Struck down were we in our youth
When we had once been strong.
Dreams for the future left unfulfilled
Our families left to mourn
For we, freedom for all, did fight
Strived for what we thought right
Fearlessly we faced the foe
As bullets flew to and fro
Brazenly we fought, and hid the pain
As we saw our comrades fall.
The sky turned black,
And streams ran red
As the battle raged on.
When suddenly, a bite we felt,
A missile had found its mark.
This is it, our prayers we said
As our life went dark.

Who for us now will mourn
As time travels on.
Do all forget the sacrifice
We did pay in blood
So that they could live
In this sacred land of ours.
Will we no honor get
For our lives called short?
Please will you remember us
Lest your memories fade.
And the awful price we paid
Once again be drawn.
