This sounds so funny to me. Bears are large. Bears are noisy. Bears
will not sneak up behind you and bite you on the butt. Bears are too
large to climb up your sock unnoticed. And, most importantly to me,
bears are too large and unsubtle to climb up your pant leg and attach
themselves to some temporarily uncovered tender bit of anatomy! Gimme
bears over spiders and leeches any day!
That's one reason I love Kentucky. Yeah, the weather sucks; too hot in
summer, cold and wet in the winter, and only a week of spring and a week
of fall. But we have no scorpions, no leeches (except maybe in the
bottom of the occasional swampy area - and I can guarantee that I won't
be tromping through the swamps anyway), no crocodiles, no alligators, and
no big a** spiders that will make all of your flesh rot away.
Ok, so there is the brown recluse spider, but if you're smart and stay
out of abandoned houses and old sheds, you're pretty safe. The
occasional copperhead may threaten you, but again, a little common sense
and you're fine. Once in a while you'll come across a fox or a coyote,
but they are far to skiddish to worry about them hunting you. Watch out
for the deer, they like to jump in front of your car when you're going
75mph on the highway. Rabid skunks show up from time to time, but if you
remember to always run from a friendly skunk, you won't have a problem
there. Our opossums come to the road to die, so you have to watch out for
them, too. Still, when you think about it, we're pretty spoiled here in
KY. We're used to being able to just get out and walk or hike without a
second thought.
Australia, while I do want very much to visit, doesn't sound like much of
a fun place to live. Too many things that want to bite you, suck your
blood, or just flat-out eat you!
