TheBanyanTree: The Vernal Equinox

The wind is roaring across the prairies this first morning of spring. It’s
a warm wind, however, with the temps above freezing. A lot of snow melted
in the last few days and our yards look brown and forlorn. They’re waiting
for the fairy godmother of spring to spruce and green them up and accent
them with spring flowers. She’s on her way, but March is a fickle month,
and will block her arrival with snowstorms and frost, before letting go of
winter, and accepting spring’s arrival.

I find myself in a giddy mood. The increased daylight makes me feel happy.
I have a surge of energy that I haven’t felt since Christmas. I want to
have sex more, although I’m too old to join the fertility rites of my fellow
animals, but I can still participate. And I want to clean out my closet and
make way for new spring clothes.

The winds of spring are also blowing across the political landscape, too.
Our state senator, Mee Moua, the first Hmong elected to state office in the
US, met with the women who will be attending the DFL district convention in
April She is in an incredibly dynamic woman, coming to our country as a
refugee and then struggling to learn English and get through school. She
eventually got herself through law school and became a respected attorney
before going into politics. Senator Moua wanted to harness the collective
power of women in our district to begin the process of changing the
political climate in this country. Over 40 women came and filled the small
room with their questions, energy, and ideas. The winds are carrying the
desire for change.

This is the time of year that children are bored and restless, but can’t get
outside, because the ground’s too muddy from melting snow, and the weather
isn’t exactly warm. As spring is making headway in April (and to alleviate
the desperate boredom), we’re going to take the grandsons to the circus and
watch animals from warm Africa do amazing things. April also marks the
older grandson’s 5 year old birthday and we have a water park weekend
planned. We’re going to shed our winter layers and frolic half naked.

And because it’s windy and muddy and spring is here in name only right now,
and I have no plans to clutter up this weekend, I’m finally, finally going
to finish my cruise scrapbook.

Springtime is the land awakening. The March winds are the morning yawn.
