On 13 Oct 2003 , John Bailey made this statement:

> You do need to be
> realistic about your friendship with trees, though. The oak tree you
> salute today is likely to outlive you many times over.
>
> Some people find that to be a daunting thought; to me it's an
> affirmation that life goes on, endlessly cycling and adapting.

"Inside every turning leaf
is the pattern of an older tree.

The shape of our future,
the shape of all our history."

-Sting

One of my favorite Sting songs. I've always loved that line, and have
tried to convey what it means to my kids. I'm not sure my conveyance
has worked yet. I guess 10 and 12 is a bit young to be asking them to
see the world as a great big place, more than their own little
universes. But I try!
