In my childhood, Christmas was like a play in which
we all had roles as actors. Mom would bake cookies
to leave out for Santa. The roles my brother, sister
and I had were to act more nice than naughty.

"Santa" is a convenient way to make gifting anonymous,
like from the universe. You didn't owe anybody. You
were loved by the universe, just as you were.
