Subject: TheBanyanTree: My First Date
My first Match date was Friday afternoon. We met at the little coffee shop
on the square. I had forgotten that our town was having an Arts Festival,
so the town was full of traffic and tourists, and the parking spaces on the
square were all full. I arrived first and stood outside of Sip, and
watched for "A". Sure enough, I spied him approaching (I recognized him
from his pix: 6' tall, grey hair cut almost military-short, good masculine
square jaw, and very nice brown eyes). And I got the big hug I had
expected! I thought I looked fairly good, wearing jeans, a pretty black
sweater, turquoise necklace, and shoes with a 3" wedge heel~to make my 5'3"
self a little taller for his 6' height. And I remembered to hold my tummy
in almost the whole time!!
We got our coffees, and because Sip was crowded and "A" had trouble
hearing me, we found a bench outside and chatted and watched people. He
had told me that he had lost a great deal of his hearing in Viet Nam, so I
knew being indoors would be difficult for him.
As we were leaving Sip, I realized that he had made an obvious mistake
while getting dressed, and a strategically placed zipper had not been
zipped! Oh S***!!! What to do??? Tell a man I had only just met to XYZ
(Examine Your Zipper)? Was this a test that he had done intentionally, to
see what I would do? If it was a mistake, I did not want to embarrass
him! There was really no place he could correct the problem, with so many
people around! So I said nothing!! I think that at some point, "A"
realized a bit of cool air where there should have been none, because for
the rest of the time he held his coffee cup in his lap, discreetly hiding
the errant zipper.
But he was a delightful guy, very intelligent, had traveled with the Army,
spent a good deal of time in Russia, even marrying a Russian girl. The
marriage didn't last long when they returned to the States, and she
returned to Russia. He talked about our mutual friend, Charlie. They have
been friends for 50 years...he was astounded when he realized it really had
been half a century!!
After about an hour or so, maybe hour and a half, I sensed that he seemed
bored. Bored??? With moi??? Huh!! So he walked me to my car, hugged me
and gave me a sweet, gentlemanly kiss, then helped me jump over the mud
puddle beside the door...and I hopped into the car, none too gracefully!
Driving home, I was hurt and disappointed. But I told myself that if he
didn't like who I am, then he is an idiot and I have 30 or so potential
guys on Match, just waiting for me to answer their "Likes." A little later
that evening, "A" emailed me saying that he really enjoyed meeting and
visiting with me, and next time, let's go get Mexican food. I responded
that next time I'll leave my high heels at home, to which he said, "Not to
worry, the heels put you at just the right altitude for that sweet kiss!"
So. A pretty nice first Match date. (And, I have a lunch date with Match
#2 for Thursday.)
Stay tuned....
Jeri
