Dreams from My Father
Dream interpretation has a long and illustrious history. The earliest instance I
know of is from the Bible, at Genesis 41. It seems that Pharaoh dreamed of seven
fat cows and seven skinny cows, then seven ripe ears of corn followed by seven
withered ones. Pharaoh asked his own viziers to tell him what it all meant, but
they demurred. However, Joseph, a Hebrew in his prison, told him God was trying
to inform him that he would experience seven years of plenty followed by seven
years of famine, so Pharaoh had better prepare his countrymen to make hay while
the sun shines. Joseph was placed in charge of the project and made a great
success of his predictions.
Lots of people like to think their dreams have some meaning or prophetic value.
Did you ever have a dream in which you solved some mystery and became convinced
you had discovered the secret of the universe? Then, after you awoke, you could
not quite remember the details so the secret became lost to the world? Such a
tragedy!
I had this experience several times so I decided to keep a note pad and pen on
the night stand so I could record the revelation when I awoke, and before the
memory faded. One morning I sat bolt upright in bed knowing I had found the
answer to all the problems of humanity. The one word I wrote on my notepad:
“Cebibels.” Every other instance of this experiment yielded similar
ridiculousness.
Just before you wake, you may notice that your dreams become more and more
outlandish. This is a clue to your subconscious mind that it is time to wake up.
When you do awake, you are pleased to realize all that craziness was just a
dream. I call this phenomenon S.W.U.D. (read: S, triple-U, D) for “Stupid Wake
Up Dreams.”
Too bad dream interpretation is all just nonsense. It can be entertaining,
perhaps inspirational, a stimulant for conversation, but doesn't represent
reality.
Later, John.
