For Bob 2 21, 2012

We laughed over eggs and toast
and planned our week.
"How about Thursday?" you said,
"We have so much to do."
And we talked of kayaks and cars
and sunsets on the beach,
and,
do you remember the time . . .?

We chatted about the kids
though they were all grown and gone
with half-grown kids of their own.
Still, they were "kids" in our hearts,
and we spoke in love.

We planned the weekend ahead of us,
a day together,
working in the coolness of morning,
planning a meal together later on.
Perhaps some wine.

Later, you showed me things on your computer:
jokes and pictures,
your latest victory on the track,
and something to frame
for the memory.

We hugged at the door
do you remember?
And, you even shouted out
something at the last moment,
and I had to turn off the car to hear.

I love you, too.

And, as I sit here and remember
how we were, that last day.
For hours later I got the call.
You were gone.
I dashed, blinded by disbelief,
to your side.
as the heat of life left your shell.
You looked the same,
Like a cruel game,
lying there, pretending.

No pretense.
The evening cooled.
You were gone.
I am truly alone.
Finally and truly alone.

And, what will I do without you?
