Inspired by the horns in the soundtrack of "The General's Daughter.

THE HORN PLAYER

I took the red velvet seat
At the back of the theatre
And I saw him there
On stage
His dress uniform crisp and sharp
Standing a head taller than the others.

His hat placed firmly under his arm
His horn upon the seat
He was silent as he took in his surroundings
And then I lost sight of him
Amongst the other musicians
But just for a moment
As the others parted,
I saw him again
His horn in hand.

I breathed a sigh of relief.

His face was clean and sharp
Handsome beyond all measure
His hair short and perfectly groomed
Everything about him made me
Admire him all the more.

When he appeared to look my way
I could barely breathe
I knew what was about to come
The player of brass
This man of war

The music began
Soft violins and cellos
Introduced the symphony
I was quieted
And held my breath
For the moment when he would stand.

I watched him prepare his horn
I watched him prepare his lips
His beautiful mouth and lips
And then I heard it
That heart breaking sound
Of the crisp cool brass
That took me to higher heights
Than ever I’d been before.

I sat enraptured
Until he was done at last
Only wishing for more
And wondered how
Anyone could play any instrument so beautifully
That it would take your heart away.

I knew then I was in love with him

With him and his music.
