Most any place that has poor soil for crops-- the prime factor in soil  
fertility is whether it receives more water than the plants living on  
it can use, thereby leaching the nutrients out of the soil.

East Texas, southern Louisiana, Brazil (but Brazil has very, very,  
thin topsoil in the rain forest-- very fragile).
