WHISPERED GOODBYES

He climbed the hill
hat and coat in hand,
the rocky path
cutting into the soles
of his weakened shoes.

The sun cut across the sky
and between the clouds,
the air shivered
with expectancy,
the edge of winter
standing by.

Upon the precipice,
upon the ledge,
he looked down
watching the light
spread across
the valley,
the village,
and knew
she lingered there.

Waiting!
Waiting for his touch,
Waiting for his whispered love,
Waiting for his warmth.

The wind rose up
behind him
and fluttered the legs of his pants,
the tails of his shirt..
It blew his hair into his eyes
sticking to the wet.
He waited, too.

Waited to depart.
Waited to say good-bye.
Waited for his heart to stop its awful pain.

He turned
as the sun rose
full and flat
and placed his hat
tight upon his head.
He pushed his arms into the sleeves
of his jacket
and shivered
unwillingly.

Stumbling down the path
he said good-bye
whispering it to the wind.
