Discrimination is a horrible thing to have to explain to a child. Your
write touches on a hurtful subject that, unfortunately, is still a dark part
of our culture. I live in the rural south, and while my neighbors are good
family people, and hard workers (when they can find work) they still
harbor the old time feelings toward other races.

The circus people live out in this rural area (after being driven out of
Sarasota by ordinances), and the locals regard them as foreigners, even after
generations of the circus folk being known and often famous performers.
The migrant workers are accused to "stealing Americans' jobs" when no white
man will work that hard for so little. Discrimination is well and alive in
the rural south. Still, on the other hand, they greatly admire my roommate
who is a pastor of a local church, for her work among the migrant peoples.
So, perhaps there is hope.

I certainly hope so. I am a retired teacher of intellectually challenged
children, and let me tell you about discrimination . . . . .
