I am way past 48, and though I have stopped running, I continue to bike, or
for a slower pace, I walk. I gave up city life, and now walk my own
acreage, or along country lanes, cross country when I can, and stop to watch a
little brook, or new foals, or find bluebirds picking out a house on a fence
post. I walk and wave to neighbors, have company in the assorted dogs who
venture out from driveways to accompany me for a time.
I have as mentor, my grandmother, who learned to waterski in her upper
sixties, and did so every summer for some time. I also admired my one-time
neighbor, a sculptress, who, in her 80s, drove a hundred miles each week to
her sculpturing studio and teacher, with the"rock of Giberaltar" as she
called it, in the back of her van. She was thrown out of assisted-living
places when she was in her hundreds for being too sassy, and then went to live
with her son of 80 something and made his life a living hell, "straightening
him out." He learned to cook, and clean house, and became a rather good
"wife" of it all. My last visit to her, she complained that everyone in the
world she knew was already dead, and all the places she loved had been
modernized, and so she thought she should mosey off and see what else she could
fix.
So, she did. at one hundred and six
I can hardly wait to see her sculptures there.
