It has been raining today and sometime this afternoon there was a good
chance of snow mixed in with the rain. It is trying to do that now. It
won't stick or anything like that because the ground is still to warm here.
Seeing this first appearance of snow for the winder nudged me to try putting
a few words together.

Winters First Snow

Winter quietly comes walking down the lane

With no loud fanfare and no great procession

Instead it sends a quiet warning – almost an apology

A few stray flakes of snow are sent as a warning

The flakes are like strangers in a strange land

Mixed in with one of the last rains for the fall

The flakes have to work to even survive

The rain drops try to become one with them

Absorbing them to make themselves bigger

They don’t even get to enjoy leaving a trace behind

Rather, they melt as soon as they gently kiss the ground

Like a lover melting into the arms of the beloved

Soon though the gentle warnings will be replaced

Instead of a gentle lover the snow will be a blanket

Covering Mother Earth in a mantle of white

Reminding all of her plants it is time to rest

Reminding all of her animals it is time to go within

Then the snow can be a monster – bringing all to silence

The snow can also come play, leaving glistening crystals

For now though the first quiet warnings silently drift down

Reminding all that it is time – time to prepare

Winter is coming - gently walking in with no fanfare.
