This story is attached to red thread, which we use
a LOT in ceremony. So the gift itself wouldn't need
explaining, but I decided to write a tag for the thread anyway.

My mother loved reading anything – including
poetry. She was partial to Kahil Gibran, Ogden
Nash, Leonard Nimoy... You get the idea.
*The Way It Is* is my favorite poem. Mom would
have liked it & it sorta fits the moment better
than the one by Nash the fly.
Oh – why not?
God in his wisdom made the fly
And then forgot to tell us why.

There's a thread you follow.
It goes among things that change. But it doesn't change.
People wonder about what you are pursuing.
You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see.
While you hold it you can't get lost.
Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old.
Nothing you do can stop time's unfolding.
You don't ever let go of the thread.
~ *The Way It Is* by William Stafford ~

My mother had a great deal of trouble with me but I think she enjoyed it.
