TheBanyanTree: Stalking

The blossoming spring plants provide him cover. He lays under their
foliage, his black fur hidden in the shadows. He watches the bird feeder
above, his almond eyes never blinking. He’s not distracted by all the
activity going on around him.

A male finch displaying his golden finery lands on a branch above the
feeder. He spends a few seconds looking around. He doesn’t see any
predators. He is safe. Then he gently lands on the lowest rung of the
feeder.

The wind quiets down. The sunshine flickers in the leaves. The human noise
pauses for just a small instant.

Then the black cat leaps up to the feeder. He swipes at the finch with his
clawless front paws. In one fluid motion the bird is in his mouth. A quick
bite on the neck paralyzes it.

The black cat, with the prey in his mouth, saunters towards the house, eager
to show his humans what he has. But the door is shut.

The black cat has to devour the bird outside. Unobserved. And alone.

A birthday is just the first day of another 365-day journey around the sun.
Enjoy the trip.
