I SAW A BOY

He was but a boy,
	strong and tan,
		dressed in gold.

I watched him cross
	the sand in my direction;
		his image distorted

As the heat
	rose from the sand
		before him,

Rising in waves
	that rippled upward
		toward their very source.

He seemed to meld
	into the golden sand,
		at oneness with the earth about him,

His blonde curls tossing
	violently in the wind,
		as it banged across the beach

And snatched ever at the surf.
