  through the Shenandoah Valley
down the vales of Virginia

  Take a long, long look at the leaves
in riots of wild brush strokes
  on near mile-high murals
now not verdant or dullest of browns

  Straddle mountains and hillsides
riding one concrete ribbon 
  that snakes through the hollows
and coalfields and corn

  See the toothless and truthless
melding paucity and riches
  mere enigma of life 
in the midst of the mountains

  Take a spin down the spine
of the range called Appalachian
  like a god, high and lifted up 
on Highway "eye"- Eighty-One
