Spring Leaves
By Margaret R. Kramer

usually the spring leaves
are paste and mud
haphazardly stuck together
by spring’s early rains
and winter’s late snowstorms

but this year
they’re light and airy
skittering away from
my rake
before i can
imprison them
in my lawn bag

my rake scrapes
across the dry ground
and the leaves hiss
and the twigs snap
as i try to make them behave
and form a pile

i rake
i pile
i fill lawn bags
until there are 21
lined up along the driveway
waiting for transport
to the compost

these spring leaves are
like fall leaves
brown
crunchy
uncooperative

A birthday is just the first day of another 365-day journey around the sun.
Enjoy the trip.
