Losing My Voice
By Margaret R. Kramer

i know i shouldn’t call you
bad names
but they sneak past the sentry
in my mind
and they fly out of my mouth
and wham!
you’re sucker punched

while you’re shaking that attack off
i maneuver to another flank
and hit you on the other side
with all the bad things
vou’ve ever done
since you
were born

your head whips around
on your neck
while I begin to land
blow after blow

rage boils up in me
steam comes out of my ears
i become a cartoon
that no child should see

you take each hit
but not don’t hit back
letting me rage
until my voice
wears down

to a croak
and i turn into
a green frog

Summer afternoon - summer afternoon; to me those have always been the two
most beautiful words in the English language.
